Invest in your people

Mansa Musa's real legacy isn't the gold. It's what he built with it.

The Editors · October 21, 2026

When Mansa Musa traveled to Mecca in 1324, the gold he carried through Cairo became legend. Seven hundred years later, people still talk about how rich he was.

But the gold is the least interesting part of the story. When he came home, he brought scholars and architects with him. Timbuktu grew into a center of learning, and its libraries gathered manuscripts on law, mathematics, astronomy and medicine. The wealth was gone long ago. The learning outlasted it by centuries.

That is the lesson worth carrying. Investing in your people is more impactful than hoarding the golden bag.

You don't need an empire to live it. Pay for the class. Mentor the young person at church. Buy from the business owner on your block. Read to your grandchildren. Each one builds something that lasts longer than money.
